Understanding Your Paycheck

What Determines Your Take-Home Pay?

Your paycheck goes through several layers before it becomes the number that lands in your bank account — the same layers you'll see broken out on your own pay stub. Understanding each layer helps you catch errors, plan your budget, and know what to expect when your income, state, or job changes.

Federal Income Tax

Withheld based on current federal tax brackets, your income, and your W-4 filing status.

State Income Tax

Varies by state — some states have no income tax at all, which affects your take-home pay significantly.

FICA (Social Security & Medicare)

A standard federal payroll tax applied to nearly all employee wages, split between Social Security and Medicare.

Pay Structure

Hourly vs. salaried, and how often you're paid, both affect how your annual income breaks down per paycheck.

Do I Have to Pay State Income Tax?

It depends entirely on where you live and work. A handful of states — including Florida, Nevada, Tennessee, and Texas — don't levy a state income tax at all, which means your take-home pay in those states is generally higher for the same gross salary. Most states do tax income, often with their own bracket structure separate from federal brackets.

How Does Overtime Affect My Paycheck?

Non-exempt hourly employees are generally entitled to overtime pay — typically 1.5 times their regular rate — for hours worked beyond 40 in a week under federal law. Most exempt salaried employees are not entitled to overtime pay regardless of hours worked. See our full breakdown in Hourly vs. Salary: How Take-Home Pay Differs.

What Happens to My Paycheck When I Leave a Job?

Final paycheck timing and whether unused vacation time must be paid out both depend heavily on your state. Some states require immediate payment on your last day; others allow a short window. See What Happens to Your Last Paycheck When You Leave a Job for the full picture.
